2 Step Marv - KJWAN’s newly released album
Knowing this band for almost 3 years now and for dozens of influences which you’ll likely ask ‘what in the world will be the next album like?’ But here we are again with the heavy and raw rock music from their album “2 Step Marv”.
The Title: It’s odd but the album’s title is “From the song, 2 Step Marv, and it so happened everyone liked the title. It’s a 2-step beat, the song itself, yeah we play it live. And I don’t know, we just said, Marvelous, so 2 Step Marv.” as explained by J-Hoon Balbuena.
The Release: “Actually, the second album was a long process, over a year’s worth of writing, writing songs, jamming, fighting, recording, everything, it was one whole year of us figuring out how we’re gonna go from the first album, how we were gonna sound on the second. It’s also an influence of what we’ve been hearing, exploring since the first album. And siyempre, Boogie.” - Kelly Mangahas
The Process: Each and every one of them was more involved in all the creative processes, from the songwriting, the recording, mixing, packaging, and down to the video production of the first single “Pintura” (directed by Maria Ancheta of Up Dharma Down’s “Pag-agos”). Marc, who writes almost all the words of Kjwan, points out that even in writing lyrics, it is easier for him to bare his soul to his bandmates, without hindrances like fear, insecurity or pretension between them. This very open friendship is a big factor in the maturity and confidence of the new album.
What to expect: With this album, they got to exercise their other “muscles” more. Guitarist Jorel, for instance, had the opportunity to incorporate his samba percussion skills to a couple of the songs (”Invitation” and “One Look”) together with some of his fellows from Brigada (his samba ensemble); while drummer J-hoon contributed his skills in track programming. Also, with regard to the addition of a second guitar, it became an important learning process for both Boogie and Jorel (who were both used to being the only guitarist in a band) to put their heads together and cooperate in order to come up with different but complementary guitar parts, while each still retained his own playing style.
The Tracks:
Invitation :: Daan :: Can’t Do That :: You Didn’t Know :: 2 Step Marv :: One Look :: Pintura :: Solana :: Shai :: Focus :: Sa Ilalim :: Slow :: Shutter
